Why Do We Make it So Easy to Apply?
High School GPA, the Unsung Hero of College Admissions
We bet you didn’t know that your high school GPA is the best predictor of academic success in college. Here is the science. So why are other colleges asking for all this additional stuff like test scores, essays, and recommendation letters? Because common sense dictates that having more information is better. But when it comes to college admissions, less is actually more.
The Myth that Better Colleges Require Standardized Testing
In 2020 about 1 out of every 3 bachelor’s degree programs in the US went test-optional. A year later the number has more than doubled, taking the vast majority of US colleges test-optional. As of the time of writing this, more than 75% of undergraduate schools were test-optional for Fall 2022 admissions.
But we are not stopping there. We are proud to be in the select company of just a few trailblazing great schools such as Cornell University, University of California, and a handful of others who have gone test-blind, meaning standardized test scores are not considered for admission purposes at all.
The Dark Side of Applying to College
All the extra requirements outside of high school GPA have a dark side to them as well, as they tend to favor applicants who could afford to pay for SAT and ACT tutors, essay reviewers and helpers, and college prep advisors. That just doesn’t seem fair to those who can’t afford to spend the money to get a leg up in the college admissions race.Â
Additionally, a recent study revealed that 1 in 4 parents cheated to get their child into college. Wow. Most of us seek validation on the merits of our own hard work and accomplishments, so getting into college because someone’s family has money or because a parent helped them get admitted is probably not how any of us want to play it without feeling as a fraud down the line. Here is a chance to get into college the right way.
And the new challenge coming out of recent breakthroughs where Artificial Intelligence programs generate unique essays for anyone for free in just a few minutes is yet another reason for the now irrelevant college application essay to be dropped completely from the admissions process.
And remember, high school GPA actually outperforms any test score, essay, or any other admissions metric as to how well it predicts whether you are likely to succeed in college.
